Hey there, great to meet you!
And great to share some adventures with you, involving being a traveling family, exploring alternative lifestyles and striving for creative, spiritual and insightful realization.
We are Miriam, Bas, Tijn Sebastian (3) & Bodhi (0). What began in 2011 as a 1-year backpacking trip across oceans grew into a bigger journey in which 2 became 3 and 3 became 4! In 2014 we changed our backpacks for a classic Volkswagen campervan and embarked on a European road trip. In 2015 Tijn was born in the south of France; in 2018 we welcomed his brother Bodhi in Portugal.
The name Red Boots Journey popped up when we realised how much in love our oldest son is with his favourite pair of footwear. It represents the footprints of our 2 boys on our travels, being outside, enjoying nature and going from fresh perspectives to the discovery that there is a much greater journey going on than only the one on the road. A journey of a growing family.
Very welcome aboard and enjoy the ride!
Once upon a time...
We sat down a lake in Italy and talked about where we stood in life. It was Summer 2010, 6 months after Miriam's mom had passed away. Through the grieve there was a growing desire to turn this loss into a bigger purpose, trusting every experience, whether happy or sad, has got a gift hidden inside. Although not knowing how, we felt ready to unwrap it.
One year later we both quit our jobs, bought 2 one-way tickets to Indonesia and started exploring the world by backpack. Mainly together as well as individually every now and then. Another year later, each filled with our personal experiences, we came back, started working again but soon began day-dreaming about another trip. We bought a Volkswagen T3 campervan and started exploring Europe by road.
In April 2015 a little adventurer joint our van-life: our son Tijn Sebastian was born. He became the sunshine in our van. And still is.
Meanwhile we have been home to sell our house and everything that was in it and shared times with our loved ones. Back on the road we now see how we have subconsciously been unwrapping to find the gem that was waiting for us:
We truly have the freedom to follow our dreams. In fact, it's our duty.
Road trip through Europe, exploring alternative living and growing as a family
Driving through Europe we combine our individual passions with our common vision, meeting people who choose an alternative lifestyle. Although being on the road will always fulfill our heart's desire, we've never stopped fantasizing about a place under the sky that we can call home one day and where our children grow up in harmony with their nature.
Some time ago we both wrote down our personal longings and visions. We were happy to discover our common denominator in the main field of where and how to live. Though we love the pleasures of cities, nature is where we feel at home. And, moreover, in a self-sustainable lifestyle.
Just like it was an enrichment to learn how people on different sides of the planet live, it is a great experience to see all different ways of living on this part of the earth: people living in tiny houses, communities, eco-homes, gift economies, urban farming,... Another world of conscious living is growing. And we're eager to discover it on our way.
As we've noticed there is especially much to explore on this topic in Southern Europe; this is where we'll be spending most of our time.
Meanwhile, a second baby traveler decided to join us on this trip! Our only experience with having a baby is while traveling, so besides magical, it feels also familiar in a way to experience this again. However, we're very excited to submerge ourselves into so much uncertainty and (learn to) trust our feelings. That is why it's a true gift to be able to share this and know there are great people around us who travel along on a distance.
So please feel invited, step inside and join the ride!
